Grant gets hit on and Amanda finds out that Grant’s friends participate in some “locker room talk” about her and whether or not Grant is going to get laid. My only issue with the book is that Grant felt a little two-dimensional to me; he has his own story and background, but personality-wise, he felt to me like the cookie-cutter nice guy. I couldn’t survive it if I came home and found you…” she trailed off, staring at the light-yellow wall.Of course, those two are also straight white trans people, but their experiences are still worth reading about.

We turned into the sun so his eyes were hidden again, his jaw set in a way I didn’t know how to read. But perhaps the most intriguing conflict is the one that develops between Amanda and Bee, who from the beginning looks like Amanda’s best hope for a friend who will understand her. Walking home alone, she is attacked by another football player, Parker, who mocks her and then sexually assaults her.

If I Was Your Girl was very heart-wrenching at times, but Amanda’s courage and ability to fight against peoples’ attempts to destroy her is also strangely uplifting.
